Does My Child Need a Tutor?

As a parent, you’ll be keen for your child to perform well in school and achieve the best possible results on their exams etc. However, sometimes they might need a little helping hand and a push in the right direction to ensure they are reaching their full potential. If you think your child’s academic performance might be slipping in one or more subject areas, or you have noticed a reluctance to complete homework, then it might be worth considering a private tutor.

There are lots of benefits to hiring a private tutor. Aside from helping them develop their knowledge in a particular subject area, support outside of school can improve their confidence. Having that self-assurance will allow them to feel more comfortable contributing in lessons and generally having a positive attitude towards their learning. To help you decide if a private tutor is the right answer, an independent prep school in London have highlighted some of the possible signs to look out for below…

  • If you have observed a significant decline in your child’s grades or they are struggling regularly with their homework, then this is generally a good indicator that they need some extra support with their learning.
  • Does your child appear to be unusually sensitive when you talk about schoolwork? Are they unwilling to go to school in the mornings? If so, you should try and get to the bottom of the problem by asking them why they feel that way or even arranging to speak to the teachers. There could be a bullying issue at school or perhaps your child is finding lessons extremely difficult. If it’s the latter, a tutor might be able to help.
  • Has your child’s teacher flagged up an issue with the amount of effort your child is putting into their work and lessons? Again, this could be a sign that they are struggling to understand the work and they therefore don’t have any motivation. A tutor can help them get their confidence back so that they start to put in the effort again.
  • If your child is repeatedly missing deadlines or their homework is taking hours on end to complete, then tutoring could help them to get back on the right track. It could also help them develop their time management skills so that school projects are handed in on time.
