Some of us have loads of outdoor space. Others have very little. Whatever the outdoors of your home is like, however your yard or green space shapes up, there are lots of ways you can bring some life to your garden without spending a lot of money. Let’s have a look at 7 easy garden ideas on a budget.
Add Some Furniture
One of the first thing you want in a garden is somewhere to sit and enjoy the sunshine. (Or cower from the rain!) Get yourself on eBay or some online sites and see what bargains there are to be had. You could even look on Facebook Marketplace and see if there are any second hand items that would work. You might consider upcycling your old furniture or something that a neighbour is getting rid of. Rattan furniture is popular but pretty expensive. You can even make outdoor furniture from pallets!
Get Painting
Whilst your furniture is going through the order process of you’re waiting for those pallets to arrive, you need to get painting. Unpainted fences aren’t appealing in the slightest. It’s amazing how much vibrancy you can bring back to lifeless fence panels, gates and even plant pots. The experts say you should paint your fence panels black because then you don’t see them. Your focal point is then other aspects of the garden that you actually want to be the focal point. It also allows your plants and shrubbery to stand out.

Plant, Plant, Plant
Speaking of plants, you need to get planting! To sow from seed you need to get seeds, which are cheap. From wild flowers which are wonderful for wildlife, to fruit and veg for your mini allotment. All you need is seeds, soil, water, sunshine and time. Of course, if you want to plant some things for immediate impact, you can find plenty of perennials without spending loads of cash. A lot of these you can tip out the pot, split into two or three and then plant into your flowerbeds. If you have a smaller space or a balcony, just use a few plant pots for a little area of nature. You’ll have a lovely spread of colour in no time.
Hang About
For an instant splash of colour or to make use of space next to doors or windows, use hanging baskets. These are often overlooked but are perhaps the easiest of our easy garden ideas. I know there are two people who are selling hanging baskets in my town, without a ten minute walk from my house. Many people are turning gardening into a business and making up cheap but beautiful hanging baskets. Drop a few quid into their piggy bank and pick up a couple for your home. Alternatively, grow some tomatoes!
Add Some Trees
You might think you don’t have much space for trees but you’ll love it when it’s in place. A couple of decent trees will really transform your outdoor space and you could even buy them for an occasion, like a new baby joining the family or an anniversary. Try a crab apple or a June berry tree. Don’t overdo it. Let them have the desired effect.
Throw Some Shapes
One of the best ways to transform a garden is to give your grass a specific shape. It can really add to the effect and atmosphere you’re aiming for. Perhaps a circle or a rectangle. It can then become a focal point of the outdoor space itself. Transforming from some old grass to a beautiful shape in which you plant things around and perhaps lay a path alongside.

On The Decks
This is one of my easy garden ideas I never thought I’d be able to do with my below average DIY skills, but I achieved it. I created a decking area in our garden. The wood wasn’t too expensive to create the frame and the decking boards were pretty cheap too. I opted for better than basic boards as I was once in someone garden and put my foot through a decking board, so I didn’t want to recreated that incident. I also treat it once a year after power washing all the grime away. We have our outdoor dining table on it with chairs around and I built some steps up to it for the kids. It sits in the corner of the garden in the shade and let’s us enjoy the outdoor space whilst we watch the kids run around on the grass.
These are just a handful of easy garden ideas you can do on a budget. You really don’t have to spend that much money at all. Good luck taking on any of these ideas in your own outdoor space. Let me know how you get on over on Twitter.
