With the speed that microwaves work, they aren’t used for too long when they are in operation. Of course, microwaves come in different shapes and sizes, with various brands having different makes and models. They all consume different amounts of energy but if we average it out we can figure out the answer to how much power does a microwave use and how much it costs.

Most microwaves use somewhere between 700 and 1200 watts. An 800 watt model would use 0.8 kWh. 10 minutes a day would be 0.93kWh each week. If you are paying 28p per kWh, that’s just over 26p. That would be just over a pound per month at that usage.

If you’re paying 75p per kWh, you’ll be paying just under 70p a week for 10 minutes each day. That works out at under £3 a month.

For those using their microwave for 30 minutes every day, paying 60p per kWh, it would be £2.10 a week.
