7 Things to Sell Around Your Home for Extra Money

This is a paid collaboration.

Running tight on cash during the pandemic? There’s tons of junk sitting around your house, and as they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. You can sell your old household junk to turn that trash into cash in your pocket.

Jewellery

If you’ve got jewellery, you don’t wear anymore, and it’s not doing any good collecting dust in your jewellery box. Even worse, maybe you have some of granny’s old jewellery boxed up in the attic that’s never going to be touched again. Even if the jeweller doesn’t care for the pieces themselves, the metals can be sold for refining, making even low-quality jewellery worth a surprising amount.

Old CDs, DVDs, Etc.

Do you have stacks of old albums and movies piling up that you’re never going to pop into a disc player again? Someone else might, and there are entire businesses dedicated to buying and trading old multimedia like CDs, DVDs, video games, and even vinyl records. Check out your local listings for a multimedia reseller and haul in your old movies and music.

Don’t expect to make a fortune on this stuff, even if you think you’ve got some really great stuff. CDs and DVDs are worth a dime a dozen, but if you’ve got a lot of them, those dimes can add up quickly. And if you do happen to have a rare piece in your collection, you might walk out with a surprising payday.

Gaming Gadgets

Video game systems new and old stay popular forever. Every generation since the 1970s grew up in their own era with its own game systems, meaning each one is nostalgic to somebody out there in some way. While it won’t resell for the price you bought it at, and even most vintage systems don’t retain much collector’s value, you can still get a decent payout for video game consoles at most stores that offer resale services. Aside from consoles, iPad gaming is now a trend for 2020. Trade-in your old iPad, upgrade to a better version for a superb gaming experience.

Stereo Equipment

Your old stereo equipment is a little harder to sell, but it holds its value a lot better than other types of old electronics you might hawk. Your best bet for selling this type of gear is Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, although you may find an electronics dealer in your area that will purchase it over the counter, as well. Make sure that your equipment is in good working order; otherwise, you won’t be able to make a penny off of it. Feedback, fuzz, and other distortions to the audio will render it completely worthless.

Collectables

These days, old trading cards are the prize of hobby shop owners and traders everywhere. Old baseball cards still hold a surprising amount of value, and game-oriented trading cards can go for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Did you play Magic: The Gathering as a child? How about the Pokémon trading card game? Certain trading cards from these classic games can be sold very fast for enormous sums.

Pet Equipment

Your old dog cage or pet crate is taking up tons of space in your home. And yet, someone out there is lamenting at spending $50 or more for a brand new one. You can resell your old pet equipment on the online marketplaces for quick and easy pocket cash in a pinch, and it’ll turn around in a flash.

Tools

You can also sell your old tools, particularly power tools if you don’t use them on a regular basis. These can sell for nearly as much as you bought them for, in many cases, but don’t expect them to sell as quickly as more popular items like your old video games.
