Sometimes you just fancy a nicely chilled soft drink. Quenching that thirst and giving you a little lift during the day. Maybe you wash down your lunch with a can of pop each day. Perhaps it’s a once in a while treat for you and the kids. With the introduction of sugar tax on some of these drinks a while back, how can you save money on your drinks purchases? Where can you buy cheap soft drinks?
Bargain Shops
Our local bargain shop do some great prices on all sorts of soft drinks. We have two bargain shops, Poundstretcher and B&M. Both are great in their owns ways but I think Poundstretcher wins for soft drinks. Not only do they have a great range instore, they also flog them at low prices. I recently found a brand called Dapple, which is essentially Appletiser, for 19p per 330ml can. It tastes great and it’s so much cheaper than a well know brand. When you look at Tesco selling a mini can (150ml) of Appletiser for 40, I could buy 2 of these Dapple cans and still have change!
Poundstretcher also slash the price of cans which are close to being out of date or are indeed dated stock. 15p for a can of cola with a best before date of a couple of weeks ago is great. Best before means that it’s likely at it’s peak before a certain date. Two or three weeks later isn’t going to make any difference. It tasted great, even better because it was cheaper! Quite often they have cheaper prices because they are in foreign packaging too. The packaging doesn’t affect the taste! Shopping at bargain stores is one of the best ways I think you can get yourself some cheap soft drinks.
Change Brands
One way to save money on soft drinks is to swap the brand you buy. Supermarkets have their own versions of well known soft drinks at a much cheaper price. Don’t just shop at eye level either, look at the bottom of the shelves and for cheaper priced options. Our local Tesco has a ‘bargain’ area where things are cheaper. This has a range of products but also includes drinks. You can get cans for 30p or 40p. Shop the world foods aisle for a new variety which you may not have seen before.

Find On Offer
If you don’t have one of these bargain shops near you, buy your soft drinks when they are on offer at the shops you do shop at. If you love the taste of Pepsi Max, buy it when it’s on offer. Usually 24 cans retail at about £8. So if you can save a couple of quid you bring the price per can down. I spotted a supermarket selling this for £6.50. That’s 27p a can. Buy when things are on offer and store them in the garage or shed.
Free On Cashback Apps
Are you using cashback apps? Soft drinks are so often one of the products you can claim cashback on, or if there is a new product to market, can sometimes get for free! At the time of writing this you can get different soft drink freebies on CheckoutSmart. This includes a free can of soft drink in a Wetherspoons which you can claim three times. Take a look in free supermarket magazines too to find vouchers on your favourites drinks.
Make Your Own
Fizzy water is about 17p for a 2 litre bottle. Combine this with some fruit juice or squash and you’ve got a whole lot of cheap soft drinks. You can also cut back on your sugar intake by making your own. What are you favourite soft drinks and how do you cut the price of enjoying them? Let me know over on Twitter.
