Abandon Your Shopping Basket

Want to get what you’re buying online for a cheaper price? One of the great ways to do this is to put what you want to buy into your online cart and then abandon your shopping basket.

How Does It Work?

It’s been reported on various forums and social networks that this really works. If you don’t need to buy an item there and then, you can often get a decent offer sent to you. Make sure you’re logged into the account with the retailer and then add what you want to the online basket. Then you simply abandon your shop. When I say abandon I simply mean closing he window. Some retailers will send you a voucher for what’s in your basket or give you better deal by contacting you in an email.

What Retailers Do This?

Some big, well known retailers have been part of the reports who do this. These include Tesco, Currys & online fashion shop Asos. The discounts offer vary depending on what you’re buying and also by retailer. As I said above, if you don’t need the items with any sense of urgency, it’s worth adding your shopping to the cart and then abandoning your shopping basket. Sometimes you’ll get something sent through, sometimes you won’t. What’s the worst that happens though? You can always buy the item later that week anyway.

How Else Can I Save Money?

There are loads of ways to save money when shopping online. One of my favourites is to shop via a cashback site. This is when instead of clicking through to the retailer directly, you go via a cashback website which tracks your purchase journey. You then receive a percentage of cashback on the amount you spent. Cashback rates vary from retailer to retailer and also depending on how much you spend.

Another great way to save money and actually get something for the pounds you’re handing over, is to see how much you need to spend for free delivery. If you’re buying a dress, for instance, for £36. The delivery cost is £5. That’s £41 in total. If you spend £40 you get free delivery. So why not find something for £4 to get free delivery and actually get something. Even if you don’t need it, you could look for a present for someone or buy it simply for the free delivery and pop the extra item on Ebay.

Often, by handing over your email address (and hence joining the retailer’s mailing list) you’ll receive discount codes to use. This often works if you’ve never shopped with the retailer before, they sometimes send you a new customer welcome code. Another way, even though I don’t like telling people to get credit cards, is to get a cashback credit card. Some of these give you a percentage of cashback on all your shopping. For example, you could get 5% cashback on all your shopping for 3 months. This could be ideal to save a bit of money on your Christmas shopping. Jut remember to always pay it off in full.
