I turned my back on iPhone a good few years ago. They are ridiculously expensive for what they are and it felt like the right time to move away from Apple products. They have been the best smartphones for a while, the bar setters in the world of palm of your hand tech. There had to be a more affordable way to have a decent phone with top notch technology still in abundance. Let’s have a look at some iPhone alternatives.
iPhone Alternatives
In a list of the 15 best unlocked SIM-free mobile phones, compiled by technradar, it’s not actually an iPhone that comes top! Whilst some of the phone are comparable in terms of price, there are plenty of cheaper alternatives to select from. SIM-free phones are getting even more popular as buying on contract over 18 or 24 months means your phone can quickly become outdated and you’re still having to pay it off every month. You also end up paying a lot more than if you bought it outright. Pairing an unlocked phone with a SIM only deal can actually work out to be far cheaper.
Who Made The Top 15?
This list was made in April 2020 so the prices are correct as of that time too. Names on the list include Huawei, Sony, Motorola, OnePlus, Nokia, Google, Honor and Samsung. The latter who take three spots in the top five! Prices on the list range from less than £50 to the best part of a grand. Depending on what you want, you could get a decent phone for a fraction of the price of a brand new latest model iPhone.
What Do You Need?
Ask yourself what you need from your phone? You can get a Huawei P Smart (2019) for under £150. How about the Honor 20 for under £300, it’s got a pretty impressive camera for a decent price. You could get a Samsung for around about the same price too. The Samsung Galaxy A70 is a Samsung without the Samsung price tag! If you want to be able to take decent photos on your phone, the Google Pixel 3a is under £250 and has a brilliant camera! All the phones in the top five are over £500, with the cheapest being the Huawei P30 Pro at £510. The Samsung Galaxy S20 takes the top spot but it’s exceptionally pricey, beating the iPhone 11 into second place. The Nokia 3310 even made the complete list because people are ditching always being connected to the internet. It only has 2.5G coverage but the battery will last for ages. Perfect for festivals or a holiday, if not your full time phone!
What I Switched To
One of the reasons I wanted to step away from the iPhone was because I didn’t need, nor want, all the bells and whistles of a fancy phone. I wanted a half decent camera for capturing memories and something I can easily use for social networks and work. That is why I’ve owned a ‘lite’ version of the Huawei P20 for almost three years. It cost less than £200 and combined with a £10 a month SIM, does everything I need. If you want to save money every month, take a look at how much you’re shelling out for your mobile phone.
