Will there be a SEISS extension? Won’t there be a SEISS extension? It’s the news that self employed people have been waiting for. We’ve been asking for clarification for a good few weeks about whether there would be a SEISS extension or not. I just wanted to know one way or another so I could plan for the rest of the year. Tonight we got the news from Rishi Sunak as he spoke at the 10 Downing Street daily briefing.
Still People With No Support
To begin with I want to say that there are still people out there who are not receiving any support. I’ve written before about how it should have been a more equal scheme. Everyone in the country should have got support because it was a global event affecting the entire nation. All for one went out the window and Rishi has made it clear at the end of his speech there there will be no other changes to the current scheme to bring anyone else into them or provide extra support. This is why I’m going to try and support those with no support, in some way.
The SEISS Extension
The news was good this evening from Rishi Sunak. He confirmed some details about how the furlough scheme will work going forward and then got onto the Self Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS). There will be an extension to the support and this comes in the form of another payment to those who are eligible. This will be open for applications, in the same way the first payment was, in August and will cover 3 months. The payment for June, July and August will be at 70% of your annual monthly profits as calculated by your previous tax returns. This will be capped at £6,570. He also confirmed that this will be the final payment. This SEISS extension will be the end of the scheme. All this information has been added to the government website.
Other Support If You’re Not Eligible
There is little to no point in getting annoyed about the situation if this scheme doesn’t cover you. I know there are people who are unsupported and angry. I know some of these people personally. The Chancellor has made it perfectly clear there will be no more changes and no more people will be pulled into these schemes. You still have options though. Universal Credit is there to apply for should you need it. If your business has been affected by Covid-19, you can apply for the Bounce Back Loan Scheme.
Support One Another
I am one of the people who are very fortunate to be getting support in this. Having lost a lot of my work I am so thankful. Just to be able to put food on the table for my family. I fully see that there are people out there who are receiving no support and there is uproar about this. I will be using some of the money I receive in this final payment to help support foodbanks or other charities helping people through this difficult time.
