Exploring Moral Values with Your Child

This is a paid collaboration.

It’s crucial for parents to teach their children the difference between right and wrong from a young age. They need to know what behaviour is acceptable and generally how to be a good person. Exploring moral values with your youngster will help them learn how to treat others and enable them to develop appropriate life skills. But how does one explore moral values with a child? Here’s some advice from an independent school in London.

Your child will learn a lot of their behaviour from you, so be sure to act as a good role model. If you are kind to others and demonstrate good manners, your child is more likely to do the same. Likewise, if you swear a lot around your child, they will start to think this is an acceptable way to behave. With that said, try and be mindful of your own behaviour around your child. Use positive, optimistic language to encourage a cheerful outlook on life.

Talk to your youngster about respect. What does it mean to be respectful? Give them examples of both respectful and disrespectful behaviour so that they can start to understand the difference. Teach them that some people deserve respect by default, such as parents, teachers, the police etc.

Encourage them to be helpful around the house. Explain to them that if they do kind things for other people, those people are more likely to do kind things back. For instance, if they help you with the dishes, you will be more likely to drive them to football training. However, they shouldn’t just be helpful and kind around the house; if they lend a hand to a friend in need, their friend will likely do the same back in the future. Remind them that not everyone is as fortunate as they are and some people will need some extra support.

Of course, when it comes to moral values, there are countless more you can explore but the chances are, you’re probably teaching your child about morality with everything you do!
