How Can The Priority Services Register Give You Extra Help?

Things are going from bad to worse in regard to the energy crisis. The new price cap (which isn’t a cap so I won’t be calling it a cap anymore) has been announced and it takes the already unaffordable energy bills to new heights. Future projections are on the horizon too and we could be looking at upwards of £6000 for the average energy bill from the middle of 2023. Utterly terrifying! Surely the Government has to intervene and provide support and solutions that will actually make a difference? Until then though, money saving tips and tricks will merely be a drop in the ocean. How can we get further support and take some of the stress out of this situation? Have you heard of the priority services register?

What Is The Priority Services Register?

The Priority Services Register is to help people in vulnerable situations. It offers free support and each energy supplier and operator keeps their own register. In order to get onto the Priority Services Register, you will need to contact your energy company.

What Help Can You Get?

When you join the Priority Services Register, you can get access to a range of various support. This includes advanced notice of planned power cuts. This is ideal for those who rely on their energy supply for medical reasons. This gives you a warning of the planned cut so you can make arrangements. If there is an emergency you get priority support, including the provision of cooking and heating facilities.

You can also gain access to help with prepayment meters, including it being moved if you cannot access it for topping up. If you are unable to read your meter, you can get regular meter reading services. Information and paperwork will also be available in accessible ways, such as braille and large print.

If you are worried about people coming to your door, you can add an identification password so you can be sure callers are who they say they are. There is also the option to take part in a nominee scheme, where you can nominate someone to receive bills and communication on your behalf. This could be a career, family member, or somebody else you trust.

Eligibility

Only certain people are able to sign up for the Priority Services Register. These include people who are disabled or have long-term medical conditions, those who have reached pension age, and people who have a hearing or sight condition. Those with mental health issues, who are expecting a baby, parents of young children, and those who have extra communication needs are also included. If you have short term issues such as recovering from an injury or a stay in hospital, you might be able to join too. Check your eligibility.
