We’ve been spending a lot of time at home and there’s nothing quite like relaxing in front of a film. Maybe it’s one of the latest binge worthy box sets that has grabbed you. Netflix has so much great content. Tiger King, The Umbrella Academy, Stranger Things, to name but a few. You have to pay for this content though and whilst we might be happy with that, there have got to be some other options out there. Other streaming services which are perhaps more affordable or have content that you’d also enjoy. Let’s take a look at some Netflix alternatives which might be right at home on your TV screen.
Amazon Prime Video
The first on our list of Netflix alternatives is Amazon Prime Video. It’s got loads of great entertainment and plenty of decent films too. If you pay for Amazon Prime, it’s included in your annual subscription. So not only are you getting next day Prime delivery, you’re getting access to awesome TV shows. For £79 a year (or £7.99 a month if you want to pay monthly) you get access to a whole range of excellent entertainment which will keep you glued to the screen. Students can get a 6 month trial (rather than the usual 30 day trial – see below) and then pay only £3.99 a month, even better!
Disney+
Disney+ is a relatively new kid on the block but it packs an absolute punch. Imagine somewhere you can watch all the Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and Pixar films, along with amazing Disney+ original content. Recent amazing additions to the streaming service include Hamilton and The Mandalorian. Disney also own Fox so there are lots of films on there you perhaps wouldn’t expect to be. I love showing my kids the old school Mickey Mouse cartoons as well as the Pixar shorts which are breathtaking. Disney plus is £5.99 a month of £59.99 if you pay for the full year. Sign up to Quidco and you can get £10 cashback if you pay for a year, giving you a year of amazing entertainment for under £50!
NowTV
Sky’s streaming service is known as NowTV and it’s pretty good if you want contract free access to everything Sky offers. You pay for individual passes so you can select what you want to watch. There’s the kids pass, the entertainment pass and the cinema pass. There are also various passes available for Sky Sports viewing, including a 24 hour pass if there’s a specific match you really want to watch. They also added a Hayu pass which is perfect for reality TV fans to watch the likes of KUWTK.
NowTV have done some decent Black Friday deals in the past where you can sign up for a year of Entertainment and Cinema, saving a good chunk of money on the usual cost. I personally buy passes off eBay for much cheaper than it costs for the monthly contract to roll over and take your money. If you want to watch Game of Thrones and Chernobyl, this is the one for you!
BritBox
I was slightly confused when BritBox came out. It was created by BBC and ITV and offers a subscription streaming service for content from their channels. However I thought most of that would be available on the likes of BBC iPlayer and the ITV Hub. They’ve moved things around so some of it is on their free catch up services but a lot is now pay to view via BritBox. It’s £6.99 a month of £69.99 for the year. Quite steep I feel for what is on there.

Play The Free Trials Game
All of these services offer free trials. So if you play the trials game, you can keep yourself entertained for a good few weeks and check out some shows you’ve perhaps heard of but never got around to viewing. Some of the content does overlap though so you might see the same thing on different Netflix alternatives mentioned.
Downgrade Your Netflix Account
Did you know that Netflix has different tiers of pricing? You might not have known and just signed up to the standard one. If you love Netflix content but want to save some money, see if you can downgrade your account. This might mean you have access on less devices or in standard definition rather that HD. However, you’ll be saving cash!
I’d encourage you to play the free trials game to stay entertained for free whilst you find the perfect service for you. Also see what other streaming products you can find. Many folk like to Netflix and chill but there are plenty of Netflix alternatives out there, at different price points. You just have to look!
