Should I Encourage My Child to Learn a Musical Instrument?

This is a paid collaboration.

Many parents are undecided when it comes to their kids having music lessons. While we all love the idea of having a child star – the next Mozart – it’s often more costly than we first anticipated and doesn’t always come naturally to every child. For those of you who are on the fence, a prep school in Surrey explore the benefits of children learning instruments below, to help you come to decision.

Studies have found that when youngsters learn an instrument, their general academic performance also progresses. Translating notes and counting rhythms is fantastic for both reading ability and numeracy. In addition, given that listening is a key element of learning an instrument, children who take music lessons are also better listeners all round. Usually, musical activities are proven to improve overall brain function.

Responsibility and perseverance are other valuable skills developed when a child learns an instrument. They have to perform and practise on a consistent basis, whilst also looking after their instrument and their music books. Even in the early days when they’re not very good, they have to endure and keep trying until they start to show signs of improve.  This also involves patience, another practical life skill which isn’t inherent in everyone. Your child might even end up as part of a band which will expand their social and emotional skills.

Generally speaking, when a child becomes involved with any type of extra-curricular activity they develop self-confidence. When they successfully learn to play a song, they are left feeling a sense of achievement and pride. Music is a wonderful way for children to express themselves and release their creative side, helping them to alleviate anxiety and tension. With all this in mind, it’s worth exposing your child to music from an early age so that they can garner the benefits throughout their childhood. Just make sure it’s really something they want to do and let them choose the instrument, otherwise they won’t enjoy it and you’ll end up wasting your money!
