Shrinkflation

It’s official, we’re paying the same price for less product. On the day that it’s announced that Wispa Gold and Double Decker will be shrunk in multipacks, along with the likes of Boost and Bournville, we’re paying the same price now for less stuff. Or sometimes even more for less. Shrinkflation at it’s finest!

Shrinkflation

Official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that over 2.5k items have shrunk in size but stayed the same price, over the last 5 years.

These items are mostly food and drink. Do you remember the kick off when Toberlone was changed in order to give the consumer less chocolate? It’s essentially that, but with hundreds of products! Less juice in your bottle, fewer crisps in your packet, yet the same price (or sometimes more!) at the till.

More For Less

As a nation, we are paying the same price for less food. So, in turn, we are paying more for what we need. There are a few ways to make sure the ball is back in your court though.

Don’t be loyal to brands. If you buy Heinz baked beans, purely and simply because you always have and you think they’re the best because they are Heinz, try changing to the supermarkets own version of baked beans. Don’t think I’m telling you to get the smart price or basic level of baked beans, but give the ‘normal’ supermarket brand a try. You’ll save some cash and still have some decent beans!

Downshifting

Some people call this downshifting. I don’t like to call it that because that puts a label on brands being superior to others and that way the extra cost seems justified. Just swap to a cheaper version, that’s all we’re doing here.

Check out much it is per 100g, or per dishwasher tablet. Sometimes pre packed veg is cheaper, often it’s more expensive. Take the time to look and compare the labels.

Make sure you look high and low for better options. Supermarkets tend to put the most profitable (to them!) products at your eye level. Don’t be suckered in. Shop how you want to shop, not just by looking at what they want you to see.

Coupons & Cashback

Be sure to save and use coupons for products and discover cashback sites like Clicksnap and CheckoutSmart for freebies and discounts. This can help bring the price down to battle back against the shrinkflation.

In the end, make sure you are getting what you want for your money. If you’re not happy with the price, don’t buy it. Try a different supermarket or even check out your local market for bargains.
