Heading off to a strange city to study and live on your own for the first time can be a daunting thing. To get your career at university off to the best possible start, it’s worth doing a little bit of groundwork and preparation. Let’s think about the form that preparation might take.
Meeting New People
If you’ve got the right disposition, you might find it easy to go out and talk to strange new people, and make new connections. But if you haven’t, then doing this can seem like a monumental challenge. It’s a good idea to take advantage of any social events in the early stages of your career, so that you aren’t playing catch up later.
This isn’t like high school; people tend to be a lot nicer. Still, it’s worth exercising a bit of caution, especially when alcohol is involved. Once you have a core group of friends that you trust, you’ll have a much easier time at Uni. After all, having friends is a major predictor of overall happiness.
Organisation
If you’re not used to studying on your own, then it’s time to get yourself organised, and to build the right daily habits. Create a system, and adapt it until it works perfectly for you.
What really matters is how you get the most out of the hours you have available. Try to find a balance between routine and flexibility. You should probably have learned in High School that it isn’t a good idea to leave all your work until the last minute. The problem here is that you’ll be entrusted to manage your own schedule, which, if you don’t have the skills, can be a little bit of a burden.
Visiting Home
Just because you’re living in a strange part of the country doesn’t mean that you’ve been exiled from your hometown for three years. Make the time to pay a visit back to see your friends and family. They’re probably going to be quite astonished at the change in your personality and disposition. Whilst you’re away, make sure that you have a means of keeping your belongings protected. If you’re in Liverpool, for example, you might look into the storage units Liverpool has to offer. The bigger the city, the more varied your options will tend to be.

Join Clubs
If you’re looking for a way to meet new people, and perhaps continue to pursue a hobby that you were involved in beforehand, then joining a club can be a great way to do it. Clubs are always on the lookout for new members, and if you share an interest with people, you’re probably a lot more likely to get along with them.
