On April 1st, the TV licence raised in price for the first time in 7 years. You’ll now pay £145 for a colour TV licence, but do you actually need one?
With the exception of iPlayer, if you’re NOT watching or recording live TV, you DON’T need a licence.
So if you only watch on-demand TV you don’t need one – with the annoy exception of BBC iPlayer. Iif you only ever ‘catch up’ on programmes that have already been broadcast, via ITV Player, ALL4, Demand 5, etc, you don’t actually need a licence. You also don’t need a licence if you only watch DVDs or Blu-Rays. On demand movies from the likes of Virgin & Netflix are also exempt as are YouTube videos.
Less than 2% of households only watch catch-up TV and don’t need a licence, so whilst the likelihood is that you do, it’s worth checking. You may have no television set at all & don’t watch TV of any kind – I know someone like this, so they do exist!
Read more & double check if you need one over on the official TV licencing page. Whilst saving £145 a year is great, the fine if you should be paying, isn’t worth the risk.
