For those with a sense of outdoor adventure, wanting to experience everything the world has to offer and more – Australia is one of the best places to go. The land down under has everything you could want and more in terms of sun, sea, sand, and stuff to do!
But when it comes to the best of the best, what should you absolutely not miss?
Four-Wheel Driving
Leave the roads behind you and tear it up along the dunes. The stunning, sun-soaked World Heritage-listed Fraser Island has one of the best (and most unique) 4WD adventures. You can put your foot down and cruise down the lengthy 75-mile beach with mountains on one side and the sea on the other.
You’ll see dingos darting around, and there are plenty of places to stop and see things like the Cathedrals and the Maheno shipwreck.
While you’re over in Queensland, you should take advantage of the incredible swimming, hiking, and one of the many fishing charters in Australia.
Ride A Jet Boat
In Western Australia, you’ll find the Horizontal Falls nestled in the Kimberley Region – you can enjoy a jet boat or a seaplane. An organized tour is the best and safest option to ensure you can make the most of the day. Since there are 800 beautiful islands surrounded by eye-wateringly stunning turquoise waters, a low-level seaplane is the perfect start.
After the perfect start to your trip, a jet boat is exactly what you need to calm down the adrenaline from the flight. The falls are incredible, as they are horizontal; it is not something you will see just any day of the week.
What could make the day even better? The fact that you can take a dip with the sharks! All safely in a shark-proof cage.
Snorkel With the Whale Shark
Whale Sharks are big, beautiful, and one of the most majestic things in the ocean. One of the largest fish on the planet can be your company for a few hours; off the Gold Coast, you’ll be able to book a session of Whale Shark Snorkeling.
You can combine a few hours gliding along a 10-meter-long shark, then head to the Great Barrier Reef. Home to 50 soft coral species and 200 hard coral species, as well as countless tropical fish, turtles, dugongs, manta rays, dolphins, and more.
Typically, to start the swim, you’ll fly in a plane looking down from above until the instructor spots a whale shark; you’ll land nearby and be next to these giant beauties in no time at all.
The easiest way to get there is via Perth on a two-hour flight – so you can get out of the big city for a few hours and enjoy a little nature for a while.

Surfing
Have you really been to Australia if you haven’t surfed a wave? Surfing in Australia is big business, and there are very few places that are this great for catching a wave. And while you’re planning on heading out to catch a wave, be sure to check out the tallest sand dunes in the gorgeous Moreton Island.
The sand dune sits up to 280 meters high, and one of the best things to do? Go zooming down the warm sands on a sandboard!
Of course, you don’t have to be an expert; there are plenty of options for beginners. For example, they highly recommend that you head down for the first time on a board, laying your tummy.
If you’ve got a decent balance, or you’ve surfed before, then you can strap into a sand board.
Abseil
If you have a head for heights, then one thing you have to do is check out the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. You’ll make your way down the limestone cliff. Even those who have been abseiling for a while are going to be better off with a tour guide.
You can combine the abseiling with canyoning for a complete immersive adventure. You’ll be able to go at your own pace, with lessons, plenty of safety briefings, and, of course, all of the equipment to make sure you’re safe.
Horseback Riding
For those who can’t get enough of a little bit of speed and sand – then Cape Tribulation is a place you have to go. It has a unique ecosystem, including a rainforest and a coral reef! Sitting between the two is a sandy beach – perfect for horses to kick up some sand as they gallop.
You can enjoy a beautiful 90-minute tour on horseback, going through the rainforest and taking in all of the wildlife and plant life there is to offer. Your tour guide will give you fascinating facts and information about what surrounds you. And perhaps one of the nice things is when the water is good for it, you and your horse will dip into the shallows – giving you the perfect photo.
This adventure is highly recommended for families, as all abilities are welcome.
Kayaking
The red rock gorges sit on either side of the kayaking-perfect Katherine River. The cliffs on either side can be as high as 100 meters, and you’ll paddle through rapids while going by forests and taking in other beautiful sites, too.
One of the biggest perks of kayaking is that you get to go to places that aren’t packed with tourists. Some of the freshwater pools have a couple of crocs, and you’re likely to hear the cockatoos squealing above your head, too.
Australia is one of the best places in the world for those who love a little bit of outdoor adventure – and something that isn’t available to you every day. If you have been on many adventures before, then the chances are you can do some of these things by yourself, but for most people, booking tour guides and day trips with everything you need to have the best day.
Perhaps one of the best things about Australia is it is one of the best places to go for backpackers and those on a budget: Travelling On A Budget.
