The summer holidays are in sight and the cost of booking a week away as a family is eye watering. For a family of five like ours, a quick look on a holiday cottage site and you are looking at a minimum of £1200 for a week on Cornwall this summer. It goes up to £2500, £3000 and even £7000! For seven nights! Absolutely crazy money. If you are looking at a more affordable way to enjoy summer holidays this year, have you considered a caravan? Even if you don’t own one, you could buy a caravan for the summer and then sell it on afterwards. Let’s have a look at some ideas.

Buy A Second Hand Caravan
There are lots of caravans for sale. You can get one for £1000 on eBay, and they go up in price to £12000+. Of course, you probably don’t want to spend ten thousand pounds on a caravan, but if you can find one for a few hundred pounds, maybe on Facebook Marketplace, you can grab a bargain. This is now your caravan to do with what you like. Much better than caravan hire prices which can be equally as extortionate. Of course you’ll need to tow it and you’ll need to find somewhere to keep it. But if you only buy a caravan for the summer there is a lot less complication. Put it on your drive for a few weeks before you get holidaying!
Site Fees
You’ll need to find some caravan sites at places you want to visit this summer. The great thing about caravan sites though, is compared to holiday cottages, you pay a lot less. You might be looking at £40-£50 a night, so around £400 for a week. But that is all you need to pay for. Holiday cottages vary so much, even in the same town. When you have your own caravan, pitch fees are pretty similar from site to site. Pitch up and explore the wonderful Lake District or head to the sunshine filled Cornish coast. Maybe enjoy a couple of holidays around the country. Your home on wheels allows you to travel!

Your Home From Home
Take food with you, cook when you want, don’t worry about breaking other peoples possessions in a holiday cottage. Know how you will all sleep and have a comfortable place to retreat to if the weather turns. This really is your home from home. If one of you has been working from home, what’s stopping you staying for longer and using the site Wi-Fi to do your work? When you buy a caravan for the summer you can make the most of those school holidays and sunshine filled months.
Sell It On
Owning a caravan comes with quite a lot of maintenance and money to pay for the upkeep. You need somewhere to store it, maybe a cover, perhaps getting it serviced and keeping on top of the cleaning. However, when you buy a caravan for the summer, the great thing is that you can enjoy it and then sell it on. Look after it and you’ll likely get back what you paid for it. Some people even make a profit, all whilst having enjoyed family holidays in it for a couple of months.

This is a great way to enjoy some more affordable and exciting summer holidays. Whilst friends and family might be paying through the nose for holiday cottages or villas, you know that you can claw some of the cost of your trip back, by only having your caravan for a short amount of time. Furthermore, there is nothing to stop you doing it again next year too!
