What Temperature Triggers A Cold Weather Payment?

You might feel a bit chilly due to the winter weather, but what actually triggers a cold weather payment? The average temperature in your postcode area has to be recorded as or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below. This isn’t just a one-off, it has to be for seven days in a row. A week of consecutive freezing or below temperatures will trigger the payment.

Who Can Get The Cold Weather Payment?

The scheme is open to those people who are in receipt of specific benefits or support. You might be eligible if you are receiving pension credit, income support or universal credit, amongst others. Payments are made automatically into your bank account. It’s worth noting that residents living in Scotland are not eligible. Instead, they might be able to receive an annual Winter Heating Payment.

How Much Do You Get?

Seven days of freezing or below is going to have a drastic impact on your heating bills. However, the cold weather payment will barely scratch the surface of you having your central heating on to keep away the chill. Especially with current energy prices being what they are. The cold weather payment is £25. You are able to get three of these during the dates the scheme is open.

How Long Does The Scheme Run For?

The cold weather payment scheme is open from the beginning of November 2022 until the end of March 2023. You can check if people in your postcode area are due a cold weather payment by typing your details into the Government website. You’ll then be able to keep an eye out for the money to land in your bank account.

If the weather is cold where you are, layer up. Use hot water bottles and blankets to stay warm. Put sleeping bags on top of your bedding at night. Double-up socks and wear extra jumpers. Do what you can to stay warm and if you are able to get a cold weather payment, it will certainly help a little bit.
