How to start saving for big life events

We all know that life can get expensive. From good times with friends to heating your home, everything comes at a cost, which makes saving for those big life events – like weddings, buying a first home or having children – even harder.

Amid the cost-of-living crisis that the UK is currently facing, many people are struggling to get by. Some people have begun to put on hold such major life events until enough money can be saved to afford them.

Although the cost of living is higher, saving money in certain areas is still possible, so you can work towards achieving those big goals with some attentive management of your finances. Read on for some advice on how to make it happen.

Set a goal

Step one to any money saving is to have a target. This will be what drives and motivates you to continue putting money away for your big event.

To do this, estimate how much the event is going to cost you and then use that as a ballpark figure for saving. For example, if you’re saving for a home, you’ll need to know how much of a deposit you need. Once you’ve got this number, it will make it easier to track your progress as you work your way up to the final amount.

Have separate accounts

Creating separate accounts makes it easier to build your savings and reduce the risk of dipping into them. We recommend having an account for your household bills, one for your big life event and one for enjoying yourself. Once your money has been placed into your accounts, you’ll get a clearer picture of your finances.

Keep a record of your expenses

Many of us feel like we couldn’t cut back any more than we do. However, keeping receipts and a detailed log of expenditures to look through at the end of each month or quarterly can help. When you assess these, you can highlight areas where you may be able to cut back and put that money towards your savings goal instead.

This could be things like too many takeaways, too many holidays or even too many trips to the pub. Whatever it is, cutting back to fund something major should be a simple decision to make.

Whatever the big life event for which you’re saving, you’ll never be too far away when you have an effective saving strategy. Follow the tips above and keep focused on your target, and you can be much more confident of turning your dreams into reality.
