Encouraging your child to give back to the community can help them to meet new people, improve their personal skills, and can even benefit them academically and professionally.
If you would like your child to take more of an interest in helping the community, here are some great tips from an independent girl’s school in London
1. Find a cause
There are many ways you can help a community; from cleaning up litter to donating toys to a local hospital; just have a think about how you can make a difference. Have a chat with your child to find out what they are passionate about. This will make them feel more motivated to put in the time and effort. Consider your child’s interests. For example, if they have a favourite park they may wish to volunteer as a conservationist there, planting trees and protecting the wildlife.
2. Donate
One of the easiest ways to help the community is to give back. If your child has stopped playing with certain toys you could encourage them to box them up and donate them to a local charity, nursery or hospital. Do the same with old clothes. Get your child to bag up old items that no longer fit and take them along to a local clothes bank. You can explain to your child where they are going and how they will make a difference to others who are less fortunate.
3. Hold a fundraiser for charity
There’s so many easy and fun ways to get children involved in raising money for charity. Whether baking, running or holding an event, kids love getting involved. Fundraising is also a great way to teach children about social responsibility and how they can make a difference to others lives. The best way to inspire your child to start a fundraising campaign is to choose an activity that they already enjoy. For example, if they enjoy cooking, they could organise a bake sale. Not only will they get to practice their baking skills, but they will also help to raise money for charity. It’s a great way to combine fun activities into giving back.
