What Part Of Your Finances Should You Focus On Right Now?

Focusing on your finances is a lifelong commitment. But from time to time, it’s good to focus on one element of financial management more heavily than any other. Throughout our lives priorities will change, and there may need to be something we have to save up for or some serious debt to repay, and putting those factors to the side can be disastrous! So, if you’re someone who’s not sure where to turn when it comes to your finances right now, here are the elements that’ll point you in the right direction.

Savings

If you don’t have any to speak of, this should definitely go to the top of the list. The cost of living makes it hard to save any spare cash, but even £1 a day could make all the difference at the end of the year. That’s £365 (give or take) in the savings pot, and that gives you some room to breathe when it comes to all your other finances. Make small savings as often as you can, and you’ll have an emergency net ready to catch you if your income is impacted.

Debt Repayment

The second thing to focus on! If you’ve got debt to clear, getting rid of it as soon as possible will bring that credit score right back up, which’ll make it much easier to plan for the future. If you’ve got multiple debts to clear, pay off anything with a high interest rate first. This will keep the debt amount from becoming predatory, and will ensure you’re back in the green at least 3 months sooner. After that, focus on anything that’ll severely impact your life if not paid on time – namely, a car loan or your mortgage.

Investments

If you’re in a good position with your debt amount, and you’ve got some savings in the bank, this is your chance to build wealth rather than solidify it. One of the best ways to do that is to invest. Invest in UK property, invest in the stock market, invest in cryptocurrency – the choice is up to you. Just make sure you’ve fully weighed up the pros and cons, especially of the different investment types against each other. Some will be safer than others whilst still allowing you a healthy return!

Organising Your Budget

If you’re all good on the other elements above, it’s time to focus on your household budget and how you could improve that. And if you don’t already have one and just spend as you like, put one in place right now! You need to be able to track all incomings and outgoings as they happen and get a good picture of your spending habits. So get that spreadsheet open and make sure it’s up to date; create a weekly budget, a monthly budget, and make sure you account for the yearly overview as well.

Your finances will always need a bit of work. Keep them organised by focusing on them according to priority.
