I’ve always said that every birthday should be celebrated in style. Presents are awesome, cake is delicious but something that often gets overlooked are birthday cards. In this blog post we’re going to take a look at importance of sending the humble greetings card.
There’s something quite romantic about using the postal service. It throws us back to a slower time. When dropping a last minute text or sending an email wasn’t an option. It shows time has been put into something, thought has been used. A hand written acknowledgement sending love and compliments. Birthday cards are under rated and if you can create the entire thing yourself, not only is it more personal and shows that even more thought has been put in, it’s actually cheaper too!

I’m not talking about creating something like you once did at school, although there’s nothing wrong with children’s school creations, my desk is littered with them! I’m talking about well crafted, professional looking, personalised and touching designs. Ones that bring wow factor, look stunning on a mantelpiece and bring a huge smile to the recipients face.
Maybe you’re a budding photographer with your own back catalogue of images you could use or perhaps you’re internet savvy and can find royalty free photos and graphics? You might be handy with a paint brush or can hand craft with the best of them? Whatever you’re good at, what you probably need is some wording for your card. This is where finding some high quality fonts free of charge is ideal. Take a look at some of the creations below that I have made as examples.

As you can see, simple designs are easy to make. Take a background you like, add a simple greeting, in this instance Happy Birthday, and then you’ve got your design put together. You could then print off onto a piece of card and fold in half or directly onto paper, cut out and stick onto a pre-folded blank greetings card.
Consider your background image. If it’s for youngsters, cartoons or bright colours is a good idea. If it’s for a sports fan, see if you have source an image of football, cricket or maybe even basketball. For older folk, blissful picturesque scenes of the coast or countryside can go down a treat. Of course, you could always use a family photo so it’s even more personal.

You then need to consider the font you are using. With so many free fonts available, the choice is pretty much endless.
