Bank Holidays 2023 & How You Can Maximise Them

Christmas 2022

Of course, Christmas Day always falls on December 25th. It’s fantastic that we know this and we can plan towards it every year. We can plan both financially and as a family, however we’ll get onto that in a moment. The actual day of the week changes year after year. Christmas 2022 falls on a Sunday. As this is on a weekend day, the ‘day off’ we get as a public holiday is on Tuesday 27th December. This is because Boxing Day is on Monday 26th December so the next possible day for a public holiday is the Tuesday.

Enjoy An Extended Time Off Work

Now we know the day that Christmas 2022 falls on, you can plan your time off work. Booking time off at Christmas using your annual vacation allowance is great as you can truly relax and enjoy the festive season. However there is a little trick we can use, getting many days off whilst only using a handful of our holiday days. Without eating into our allowance too much, we can enjoy a good stretch of time off work.

By booking just three days off work, we can enjoy 10 days off. Simply book Wednesday 28th, Thursday 29th and Friday 30th December off work and you’ll be able to leaving the office on Christmas Eve (24th) and not return until Tuesday 3rd January. This is because, just like Christmas Day, New Years Day falls on a Sunday. So the public holiday moves to the Monday. Of course, not everyone only works during the week and many people work over the holidays and have different shifts. Whilst this won’t work for everyone, if it does for you, it’s a great way to have some much needed time off.

Start Planning Now

It is so important to plan ahead of Christmas 2022. Whilst we only have a few months remaining, anything you can do ahead of the festive season will take pressure off you, allowing you to enjoy it, rather than stress. How much do you usually spend on Christmas? Look back at your previous bank statements, yes actually dig them out or look at your online banking. When you know how much you usually spend you can plan for it.

It’s difficult to find £500 at the start of December, which is how many people get into debt. If you plan throughout the year, you can save up that £500 month on month. Perhaps week on week if you get paid weekly. £500 over 12 months is just under £42 a month. Much easier to find that every month and watch it build up then scrabble around for it at the last minute.

If you save money each month, this also allows you to dip into those funds if you see a gift for a loved one, on sale throughout the year. So often, prices go up closer to Christmas. You don’t want to be forced into buying something which is more expensive closer to Christmas, when you could have got it cheaper earlier in the year and put it away.
