Neighbourhoods
London has got different districts and neighbourhoods just like anywhere else. In fact, it would be fair to say the there are many different Londons. Living in one area is not the same as living in another one, and you need to make sure that you find the right space for you.
Upscale Kensington and Chelsea are perfect for those who prefer the finer things in life. You could even check out some of the beautiful properties around Notting Hill if you want to feel like you have stepped into a Richard Curtis film every time you open your front door.
Similarly, there are neighbourhoods like Brixton, Croydon, and Shoreditch that have a more down-to-earth and relaxed vibe. If you have never lived in London before, it might be worth to take a trip down and spend a little time in some of the areas you like the sound of. Rent an Airbnb, and try to get a genuine feel for the area at all times of the day and night to find out if it is for you.
Master the Transport System
London is so big and sprawling that you simply can’t live here without mastering the public transport system. Though some people do drive around London, chances are that you will not be one of them. Instead, you should focus on learning how the bus and Tube works.
The buses can seem intimidating, but they come frequently and the routes have plenty of stops. The big red London buses are an iconic sight of the city, and you should try to get used to them as they may be a better option than the Tube. The Tube is fantastic, but it can be overcrowded and exceptionally busy during rush hour. Make sure you pick up an Oyster card. They can be used to pay your way on all forms of public transport in London and they cap out at a certain amount – perfect for when you have a lot of travelling to do in one day.
Remember that public transport in London is also built for going into the centre and not around the perimeter. If you cannot walk to work but it is located clockwise from you in London’s “circle”, you might not have a choice except to go into central London then come out again for your commute.
Think About the Extras
When we visit a city as tourists, we want to be near the attractions. As residents, we want to be near conveniences. Take note of where your supermarkets, cafes, cinemas, and other amenities are when you visit a new place.
