Lots of us are looking for ways to save money. A huge part of what we pay for every week is food. Our shopping bills have been rising recently, with packet sizes shrinking and prices skyrocketing. We’re getting less stuff, for more money. With that in mind, we must look at ways to save money on grocery bills. One of the ways we can do that is with free food apps. Let’s have a look at some of the best ones!
Olio
Perhaps the best of the free food apps we are going to look at, Olio is a great way to reduce food waste whilst building a community in your local area. Food is offered, for free, on the app. This could be unwanted, stuff that people aren’t going to use, or perhaps came across at a cheap price at the shops. It can also be a great place to offer up food that you have grown yourself in your garden and aren’t going to use. Apples from that overbearing tree, for example.
Simply list the item and then someone locally might be in contact asking if they can have it. Arrange a collection and there you go, free food. Similarly, you can contact people about items they list. There is even a Non-Food section and the app appears to be growing, by offering a For Sale part recently introduced. The Olio tagline is Share More, Waste Less. Absolutely spot on!

Too Good To Go
You have probably seen Too Good To Go, as many bloggers have created videos about what they have managed to get from retailers that we know and love. Too Good To Go works with retailers, cafes and other establishments, to create Magic Bags at the end of the working day. These are available ahead of time for customers to purchase at a reduced price. You will then be given a time to collect the bag and you simply get the store to scan your code on the phone.
There are loads of retailers on there, in my area, I have Starbucks, Harvester, Morrisons and more! Bags differ in price but always have a higher value included than what you pay for them. You don’t know what you are going to get, so there is a surprise involved. However, if you enjoy trying new items as well as munching on favourites, this can be a great way to reduce the price you pay for food shopping and your work lunch.
Checkout Smart
Checkout Smart is a great way to get cash back on things that you buy. The items that appear on this app are from brands you know as well as some you may not have heard of it. How it works is that you buy the product, scan the receipt into the app and then you get a percentage of the price you paid, returned as cashback. Quite often there will be an item appearing on the app which is 100% cashback. This means, once you have bought the product, scanned your receipt and your cashback has been paid, it is free!
You can search offers at all retailers or filter down to the shop you specifically shop at. The minimum payment is £5, however, if you withdraw less than £20, you’ll incur a 5% fee. Checkout Smart can be a great way to reduce your shopping bill whilst also trying new flavours and foods!
GreenJinn
GreenJinn is similar to Checkout Smart, but has lots of different offers available. There are lots of free items to claim, along with 50%, 1/3 off and flat amounts of cashback such as 15p when you buy organic carrots from Asda. This cashback is a fantastic way to trim down your shopping bill. It works in the same way as Checkout Smart with the scanning of the receipt, however, there is a smaller minimum amount to reach before you can request your payment.
Shopmium
It wouldn’t be a list of free food apps without Shopmium. It is similar to GreenJinn and Checkout Smart but doesn’t have a minimum withdrawal amount. Each of the cashback amounts is sent directly to your bank account once they have cleared and been processed. There are loads of great offers, including freebies on branded items you love. They often have challenges where you can earn a little bit of extra cashback if you submit a certain number of claims within a specific time.
Be sure to sign up for Shopmium by using the code KFMKKEFK. That way you will receive a great 100% cashback offer for something extra tasty. This offer changes every so often however previous freebies have included Pringles and Ben & Jerrys ice cream!

Supermarket Apps
All of those supermarket apps you download to your phone have great offers on there. You might be able to get an extra 10% discount on vegetables that you buy from Morrisons. The Asda Rewards app allows you to build up a pot of cash to turn into vouchers. If you shop at Tesco, be sure that you are scanning your Clubcard app to get the best prices! Lidl also have a great app! You might get the occasional freebie, especially if you input your birthday! These free food apps are well worth downloading if you shop at these stores.
Fast Food Apps
Some of the best free food apps are from fast food places. I’ve previously got freebies from Subway because I signed up with a promo code which gave me enough points for free food and drink. You can get 200 points (which is enough for a free coffee!) by using code X-5Z8WFLI when you sign up. You can also get the occasional freebie or build-up points for free stuff by using the McDonald’s, Greggs, and Burger King apps, along with plenty of others!
Conclusion
If you are looking for free food apps that will actually save you some cash, start with these great ones. They can really help you put food on the table at a fraction of the price, whilst also clawing back some of the money you spend on shopping every week.
