Toilet Twinning Can Change The World

Have you heard about toilet twinning? We came across it when we were looking at what charities to support. It’s a scheme, part of the Tearfund charity, which aims to raising funds to provide proper sanitation in some of the poorest parts of the world. I’d love you to take a look and see if it’s something you could do yourself.

Why We Twinned Out Toilet

We decided to convert our garage when we moved house. The idea was that it would give us an office space and also a utility area. We then thought it’d be a good idea to put a toilet in the utility space too, so we’d have a downstairs toilet not only ideal as it’s next to the office but also perfect for toilet training our young kids. We’d seen this idea of toilet twinning on the wall at someone else’s house. We thought that adding a third toilet to our house was a privilege and we wanted to give something back. So we decided to twin our toilet.

What The Organisation Does

The organisation uses the funds raises to not only provide toilets to poor communities, but also teach about hygiene and pump clean water in the region. Did you know that 2 billion people don’t have somewhere safe to go to the toilet? It’s a basic human right in my mind. It costs just £60 to win your toilet and ours was twinning with a latrine in Burundi. Interestingly enough, we sponsor a child in Burundi too so that was nice to know we’re making even more a positive impact in one country.

You get a certificate, which we then framed and hung on the wall above the toilet. It’s amazing when you read about the change you are helping to create. ‘My toilet brings us freedom, privacy and dignity as a family.’

Could You Be Part Of Toilet Twinning?

I think toilet twinning is a great idea. You could do it at home, or as a business, or maybe even donate to get toilets twinned at school. Our children and the next generations are going to be the ones who can really make a change in our world. If they understand that there are people who don’t have somewhere to even go to the loo, they can perhaps help the world change.

I know people who have even asked for toilets to be twinned as their birthday present or as part of their wedding present list. You can even get involved with Bin Twinning, raising funds to help a community project that’s preventing disease, protecting the environment and creating jobs. Toilet twinning is a great way to help others with such a simple act. Twin your toilet today!
