The effect that money can have on your mental health is massive. A lot of us have enough on our mind without the added pressure of finances. How can you make a positive change to the link between your money & mental health? Let’s take a look.
Having mental health issues such as depression and anxiety is debilitating. Firstly I want to say, you are not alone. Even if you don’t have a condition that you are taking medication for or have seen a doctor about, we all feel low at times in our life. It’s not something to hide from or be embarrassed about. If money is adding to all this, there are ways to make life easier.

Don’t Spend What You Don’t Have
So many of us have low moments in our lives which we try and buy our way out of. It can start with a new outfit and suddenly you’re thousands of pounds in debt. However you feel, spending money isn’t going to make it any better. It will make it worse. Cut up the credit cards. Removing the option of spending, means you won’t spend. Or overspend. If you have to go to the shops, only take cash so you know you won’t be able to buy more than you have money for.
Automate Payments
One of the great things about living in the time in history that we do, is the introduction of convenience for us customers. If paying bills and getting embroiled in the world of money doesn’t help your mind, set up automatic payments. That means the bills are paid without you having to do anything. They don’t have to get on top of you, it doesn’t have to become all too much, because it’s dealt with, without you even having to think about it.
Speak To The Experts
There are many agencies, charities and experts out there who have free advice and help for those struggling. Again, you are not the only person in this position. If you need help with your finances, StepChange is a great organisation which can really help you out. CAP UK are fantastic, as it NationalDebtLine service. You might also be able to speak to your bank as most of them have services which can help you. It’s important to know that you don’t need to pay for advice. Don’t pay out more cash to try and get help out of a money problem.
If you need help with your mental health, organisations such as Samaritans are just a phone call away and Mind have great information. Your should also contact your GP surgery as your doctor might be able to help with a referral or possibly medication.

Be Kind To Yourself & Others
The last thing you want to happen is your worries about money to lead to unthinkable debts which change your life. There is help if you need it and I encourage you to reach out if you are in this situation.
Above all, be kind to yourself and others.
